Your business needs to have a mission statement for many reasons. A mission statement is a summary of the goals & values of your business that serves as the foundation for all your business decisions. Whenever you make a decision in your business, you need to return to your mission. Your mission statement determines your business’s direction and helps align your team member’s tasks with a specific purpose.
Now that you know the WHY, let’s look at how to create a mission statement!
Step 1: Write out WHAT your business does.
What are the simple, core things that your business does? For example, “my business designs clothes, grooms dogs, produces movies, transports food, builds homes, designs social media posts, cleans houses”… and the list goes on! Don’t think too hard about it – just write!
Step 2: WHO do you do your business for.
Think back to why you started your business in the first place. Who did you want to help? What were you passionate about? Who are the people that you love serving? For example. “I own a restaurant in order to provide fresh food to hungry customers. I clean houses to give working moms a break from their own household duties.”
Step 3: Write out HOW your business does what it does.
This should bring you back to the basics of your business. How do you do what you do? How do you provide a service to your customers? Is it a service-based business? Is it a remote service-based business? How do you provide the food to your hungry customers? Are you a chef in a restaurant or are you shipping out fresh homemade meals?
Step 4: Describe WHY your business does what it does.
Again, think back to why you started your business. Are you a working mom who can’t keep up with the household duties and wanted to do everything in your power to support other working moms? Do you create beautiful dishes of food because you love seeing the joy in someone’s eyes as they take that first bite?
Step 5: Craft your mission statement
Now that you have completed those four steps, you’re ready to go! Use our easy-to-use outline to fill in your mission statement:
